Art Film Talk #14 Chris Paine, Who Killed the Electric Car?
August 8th, 2006
David Tames talks with Chris Paine, director of the new film Who Killed the Electric Car, at the 15th Woods Hole Film Festival.
The film chronicles the life and mysterious death of the GM EV1 electric car, examining its cultural and economic effects and how they reverberated through the halls of government and big business. In 1990 California passed the Zero Emissions Mandate (ZEV) which encouraged the commercialization of the electric car. But the electric car threatened the status quo. The film tries to get at the truth behind its demise through interviews with automakers, legislators, engineers, consumers and car enthusiasts. The film is currently in theaters, so see the film and tell a friend.
Coverage of the Woods Hole Film Festival will continue in the next episode.

Nice job David. Good questions and surprisingly audible given all the background noise. Thanks for giving filmmakers like me the opportunity to chat in longer form then the usual sound byte. Good luck going forwrard with your relaunch….

Hi. I am a mother, hence the fun handle, of two amazing children. My Daughter Alexia, just 13 and our son, Cole, who is ten. I am a typical "Mothering" mom; natural pregnancies, extended nursing (for this modern period anyway) home schooler (We are natural Pagan Waldorf'ers) and my husband and I live off the grid in a solar cabin in the beautiful Uintah Mountain here behind the Zion Curtain in Utah. We're here because of the land, certainly not the politics (icky!).
My husband I are both University educated. He is a software designer and I have my degree in organizational communications.
Anyway, we have tried to raise our children to love nature, humanity and non-violence. Of course, my son loves adventure and heroism. George Lucas is his favorite guy, mine is Joseph Campbell (Lucus' favorite guy). We have looked at good versus evil and discuss is daily (We liken George Bush Jr. to Frank Burns of MASH, but dimmer).
We watched your documentary last night. Brilliant! Well done and, unfortunately very frightening! After falling asleep, Cole, our vivid dreamer and brilliant thinker, who most night laughs out loud at while dreaming and rarely has "nightmares”, woke up terrified. He said "I can't get the feeling of evil out of my mind! I can't believe America’s govt. is so evil. They are going to destroy the world!" This is coming from “knowing” about (appropriate for a 10 year old) of Hitler & Darth Vader and other evil villains. Our government is a nightmare! We soothed him by commenting on all the hopeful things happening in the world and assured him all cars would be non-petrol by his adult life.
We are fascinated with Nikola Tesla and I personally think of his great genius often and wonder why science leaves so much of his work behind, although we really don’t know how he did a lot of it! And may never know! But he was brilliant and he laid a great map for discovery. Perhaps you may consider a documentary on his work? And it’s relevance to the future?
Great work! We are hoping here behind the Zion Curtain for progressive? California our sister state to step up to the helm and help themselves out of a horrendous cloud of pollution (which blow in to Utah) and lead the WAY!

We would also like to write to the amazing older couple (?) who designed and developed the EV batteries. They were such kind and beautiful, HOPEFUL and busy people. They remind me of my own children's God Parents. Anyway, my kids and I want to write to them and thank them for their work. Also, the woman who worked with the EV cars and was a main interview in the doc.
Right now we are fighting a strip mine for tar sands in our own canyon and know well the corrupt and devious ways of venture capitalists and oil money!
We are fighting the good fight and Heyduke is here, working hard with humor and hard work to stop the MAN!
